What do Girls Want?
It has come to my attention that the other half of our species, you know the ones, those people made up with both a y and an x chromosome, think they know exactly what we want. Many of these things fall into the preconceived idea that females want and need to be rescued. If a man doesn’t feel comfortable or able to sway the ladies with this notion of being a hero, perhaps they can work their magic by telling you all about their speccy job, their unreal real estate in an up and coming part of town or even perhaps how lovely the car is that sits in their driveway. Are these attributes a sure-fire way into a prospective girl’s heart? Not according to the girls I’ve talked to.
So here it is fellas, a list of what you think is important but really we don’t give two hoots about.
You may think the hours you spend at the gym are highly impressive. It definitely takes dedication, but most women really don’t need a set of washboard abs to be turned on. If you’ve taken note of trends on social media you’ll actually see that the “dad bod” is a thing. Yep, that’s right. We just want a guy that takes a bit of pride in himself but is still relaxed enough to eat a counter meal down at the local and will enjoy a couple of beers without worrying about how many ab crunches he’ll have to do the following day.
Social status. The average female doesn’t really care about fancy cars or mansions. But we do take note of how you handle yourself socially. Are you socially intelligent? Are you able to communicate effectively? Can you make a girl laugh? Are you confident in social situations? You don’t need to have over 500 “friends” on Facebook, but if you posses the before mentioned attributes you will go far. Being socially intelligent i.e. handling yourself in social situations is highly attractive.
Looks are not everything. Everyone loves a bit of eye candy, including the ladies. This does not mean though, that a good-looking guy with zero personality is a catch. What trumps physical attractiveness? See the dot point above. Looks can fade. Quite quickly if a douche bag lies behind the pretty face.
A man’s net worth. You got a six figure salary, go you! You’re a tradie with a successful business, yay! You drive for a living? Whatever you do, do you have a pride in your work and a passion for what you’re doing? Obviously there are only so many philanthropic, mega rich, non arseholes in the world, so we really are not expecting you to be one. But ambition can definitely be a turn on. Don’t think taking over the world, think about completely owning what you do with a sense of pride.
We want to be walking down the aisle asap! Ummm, no. While marriage is very important to some women this does not mean it is important to all women. The same goes for starting a family. Not every woman wants to have children. So, instead of being completely scared off “just in case” the girl you’re seeing is getting too serious and you see an unwanted marriage on the horizon, how about you man up and actually talk about what the two of you are after? If you’re not on the same page, fine, move on. But you may just find you’ve been assuming that she wants to “settle down” and have kids when that’s not what she wants at all!
The car you drive. So you have a car. Is it nice? How lovely. Most of us (yes some women are into cars too) do not care. Can you pick me up in a car that does not have a month’s worth of McDonald’s wrappers on the floor? Winning! Is it registered and road worthy? That’s all that matters. If you ask a girl to wipe her feet before she sits in your car to protect the floor mats, you might run into a problem.
Real estate. If you own a property, any property, good on you. These days it’s hard to get a foot in the door, so if you were forward thinking enough to save for a deposit and get yourself a home or an investment property, that’s a good thing. While a house on the esplanade, a modern city apartment, a heritage bluestone cottage or a sprawling home in the hills with a killer view would all be lovely, most women understand that these are properties to aspire to. They belong on many of our wish lists that will never be obtained. And that is okay. A clean tidy home that is looked after is what matters most. Somewhere you can invite your friends back to and that is comfortable. You don’t even have to own it. People all over the world rent. And that’s okay too.
So you can see by this list that most women are not actually that shallow and are only looking for a partner who will fulfill all their “materialistic” needs. Connections can not be maintained on such superficial expectations. The laws of attraction and the secrets to maintaining healthy relationships definitely do not reside in the unrealistic expectations we seem to have forced down our throats by the many media, social and dating platforms we have around us. So be nice, look after yourself, be aware of the way you treat others and you’ll be at least half way to being a desirable human being!
